A New War Begins in Foundation Season 3
Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for season 3 of its Foundation series, a trailer that finds our old friend Galaxy in need. From the official trailer for Foundation season 3, we’re introduced to a galaxy in peril, a new crisis of astronomical proportions, and one of Asimov’s most powerful and mysterious villains: The Mule. The third season of Foundation will be released weekly on Apple TV+, with the first episode of the new season premiering on July 11, 2025, and concluding on September 12, 2025.
Season 3 follows up on the events of the second season, leaping ahead 152 years to find the series in the timeline known in Asimov’s work as the Third Crisis. In a direct statement from Apple TV+, the official summary for season 3 reads: “The Foundation has become a more established and expansive power than the empire expected, and the previously unassailable Cleonic Dynasty is starting to show cracks. But when faced with threats from both within and without, the two powers are forced to join hands in defense of a secret that could tear them both apart: the arrival of the Mule, a warlord with a galaxy of armies at his back and the terrifying power to influence human emotion.”
The trailer for the upcoming season of Foundation introduces the character of The Mule, played by Pilou Asbæk. In the trailer for season 3, Hari Seldon’s voice sets the tone of the new entry, providing the audience with a grim reflection as the trailer fades in and out of black. He states: “Centuries ago, when we foretold the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was born to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the fulcrum.” Next, we hear Gaal Dornick’s voice. She has worked her way into a place of more prominence and power in the second season, and her voice intones in warning: “We’re out of time.” Mule is more than a generic villain. He has a sordid ability to control the emotional reactions of human beings. “I can make enemies into allies. Hate into love,” he intones, with absolute calm. “It only takes a little push.”
The trailer shows us more traditional action sequences for the series. There are explosions, spaceship battles, collapsing cities, and more. But we never see this warlord in action. The trailer fades out as Hari’s voice comes in, “As for the future of the Foundation, let history be our guide.”
Foundation’s third season will feature several additions to the cast, including Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, a fiery devotee of Hari Seldon and self-styled psychohistorian. Siddig has also guest-starred in several other adaptations of the source material. Troy Kotsur will star as Preem Palver, leader of a psychic planet. Cherry Jones will appear as the Foundation ambassador Quent. Brandon P. Bell joins the cast as Han Pritcher. Synnøve Karlsen will play Bayta Mallow. Cody Fern will star as Toran Mallow. Tómas Lemarquis will join the cast as flamboyant church leader Magnifico Giganticus. Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing will play Song, and Leo Bill will join as Mayor Indbur.
Foundation Season 3 Trailer Details
The drive of Foundation, at least since the beginning, has been Isaac Asimov’s psychohistory: a made-up form of mathematics and sociology that applies statistical probabilities to predict the broad movements of history. The real mystery of season 3 seems to be about whether the predictions of psychohistory will hold or if they’ll fall apart. Can Hari Seldon’s logic and history-predicting methodologies take on a being like the Mule? Or will this new villain be able to force the galaxy into complete disorder? The trailer seems to say that the answers are more in the world of emotion than of logic.
Visually, the trailer for the series’ third season is consistent with the previous season’s debut trailer. Sweeping vistas of space, rich world-building, large-scale civilization building, and big-budget action abound in the new trailer for the Foundation. The most striking thing about the new trailer, however, is not the scope of the universe but the emotional pull of the threat. There’s a feeling of tension, anxiety, and uncertainty about the coming confluence of these major galactic powers. Can the Empire and the Foundation align? Is psychohistory strong enough to predict this moment? And more importantly, is there any version of the future in which the galaxy doesn’t burn?
Season 3 of Foundation seems to answer some of those questions from the last season. It ups the ante, the world-building, and the characters. With weekly release dates beginning on July 11 on Apple TV+, viewers can expect the new season to go up weekly, with a final episode on September 12.
If the first two seasons were concerned with assembling the pieces of Seldon’s plan, the third seems to put that plan to the test. Can it hold in the face of what may seem like impossible odds? The arrival of Mule may not only imperil the entire galaxy but also the very idea of predicting the future.
