Netflix Splits Stranger Things Final Season Into Three Releases

An extended teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 has been released, and all signs point to the finale being an absolute doozy.

Netflix dropped a late Tuesday one-minute preview of the coming final installment. It shows familiar scenes and characters in new, horrifying lights: Even before the trailer cuts to black, fans can see the Upside Down has taken more hold over Hawkins; see demo-dogs stalking the halls in the dark; and witness a brief action sequence complete with flamethrowers.

In another first-look moment, viewers are treated to the arrival of Linda Hamilton, armed and ready for battle alongside the rest of the Hawkins gang.

Where We Left Off

Season 4 ended with Vecna, the all-powerful, evil force that has been at the center of all the mayhem, ripping the gigantic gate open to let the Upside Down spew unbridled into Hawkins.

Season 5 picks up at a new time in the story: the fall of 1987. And if the calendar is any indication, things are about to get very real, very fast. It marks exactly three years since Will Byers’ disappearance in Season 1, the incident that kicked off the series in the first place.

Final Season Details

Season 5 will consist of eight episodes. But, they’re each going to be feature-length, so it’s eight Stranger Things films in one.

Netflix’s description of the fifth and final season sets the table: “Hawkins is forever changed. The Rifts have been torn open, and the Upside Down has invaded. With one goal in mind, the old gang and their new allies band together to find and kill Vecna. But, as they close in on the monster, his location and plan remain a mystery. The U.S. government has placed Hawkins under military quarantine and is deploying every resource they have to capture Eleven, sending her on the run. As the third anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, a more ominous sense of dread and foreboding looms. The final battle is coming, and this time, our heroes are facing an enemy more evil, more malevolent, and more powerful than ever before. The only chance of survival is a full party. All allies will be needed for the last stand.”

The Cast and Crew Are Back, Plus Some Familiar Faces Return

This season will see the return of many familiar faces. In addition to the main cast members, Netflix confirmed that Amybeth McNulty will return to the series as Vicki. Suzie, Dustin’s girlfriend, will return this season and will be played by Gabriella Pizzolo. Jamie Campbell Bower will also be back in the role of Vecna.

Plus, several of the famous faces from Stranger Things will be appearing in the show. Linda Hamilton will be in the series as Dr. Kay. Hamilton herself tweeted that it “feels so good to be back in Hawkins” and assures fans that she’s “full steam ahead to go!”

Three other actors will be joining the series this season: Nell Fisher will play Holly Wheeler; Jake Connelly will star as Derek Turnbow; and Alex Breaux will play Lt. Akers.

From Kitchen Sink Horror to Psychological Thrills

Judging from the trailer, at least a few of these new and returning characters will have a starring role in the final season, though their specific part in the plot is still very much a mystery.

Not all of the new faces and returning characters are a mystery. In one scene, fans can make out the image of Lucas and a few others cowering in the kitchen from an onslaught of demo-dogs. The camera angle, lighting, and very presence of the mechanical creatures are meant to evoke another kitchen-in-peril situation: the velociraptor scene from Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

Sci-fi/horror fans can also get their fix of this recurring theme from Stranger Things, as the trailer also gives viewers a chance to hear Vecna utter the disturbing line, “found you.”

And just when it seems like the new season has more than enough energy to carry Stranger Things to the end, the final shot of the trailer leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

Fans can see the image of Eddie Munson’s gravestone, spray-painted with the words, “Burn in hell.” Eddie was a hero of the Upside Down, having nearly single-handedly stopped Vecna in the finale of the previous season. But his legacy has not survived in the wake of his noble sacrifice. This detail not only serves as another reminder of Eddie’s untimely death, but a terrible injustice in the eyes of the people of Hawkins.

Stranger Things: Season 5’s Streaming Release Schedule

Fans are probably excited to binge all eight episodes at once, but they’ll have to wait a few months to complete the Stranger Things saga.

Netflix plans to release Stranger Things Season 5 in three volumes. Volume 1 drops on November 26, 2025; Volume 2 is available on December 25, 2025; and Volume 3, the final finale, will be released on December 31, 2025.

Set during the holiday season, the Stranger Things series has become one of the best examples of pop culture to tap into the Christmas spirit. This release calendar will be sure to split up fans, but also keep the popular show in the conversation for an extended period.
