Marvel’s Ironheart: What to Expect from Riri Williams’ Solo Story
Ryan Coogler’s stellar year continues to get better. Fresh off the promising box office performance of his latest film, Sinners, the director has already lined up another major venture—Marvel’s upcoming limited series, Ironheart. The studio has just released a stylish new trailer in the lead-up to the show’s much-awaited June 2025 premiere.
The six-episode Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart, a teen tech genius and protégé of Tony Stark from the original comics. This new project will be the last TV series of the MCU’s Phase Five.
Announced first in December 2020, Ironheart was earlier said to release in 2023, but then Marvel decided to streamline its long-term approach and pare down the quantity of output it was releasing each year. The studio cited a problem of market glut as a reason for this. The delay in premiere will now see it hit screens this summer. Teased in footage released during the 2024 D23 convention, it was described to be “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center” and promised to be darker and grittier than most MCU television series.
Riri Williams had a prior on-screen appearance in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, the budding inventor caught the attention of Namor and his blue-skinned army when she built a vibranium detector while at MIT. During the movie, Riri forges a friendship with Shuri based on a mutual love of science and eventually crafts an armored suit (similar to Iron Man’s) to aid Wakanda in its defense. After Namor’s defeat and the resumption of peace in the kingdom, Riri was forced to leave her suit with the Wakandans before departing to return to MIT.
A Saga That Binds Science Fiction to Fantasy
Ironheart takes place shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever. According to the official synopsis, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
The cast also features a number of other actors. Lyric Ross will play Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich will play Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana is Cousin John; Matthew Elam is Xavier Washington; and Anji White is Riri’s mom, Ronnie. Joining the cast is Shea Coulée as Slug. Returning to the MCU is Jim Rash as the dean of MIT, reprising his role from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. The cast also boasts the inclusion of Sacha Baron Cohen in an undisclosed role.
In the recently released trailer, Riri is first seen entering a now-shut pizza restaurant before getting herself stuck in an elevator loaded with poison gas with only two minutes to find an escape route. The trailer then cuts to reveal it’s all part of a test or, in the words of the person who set her up, an “interview” as she’s challenged by The Hood. On the intercom system, he informs her she is going to suffocate in two minutes and to break into a floor-mounted object which contains a gas mask if she wishes to save herself. Riri, however, says she does not agree to play his game and instead finds an alternative escape.
Impressed by her innovativeness, The Hood subsequently asks her to join him in a non-disclosed venture. The Hood, who is suggested to be in the business on the wrong side of the law, says he knows she is no joke and he wants to help her accomplish something to be proud of and “iconic.” Riri, after some hesitation, eventually accepts the invitation, much to the consternation of her friends, including Natalie, who cautions her against The Hood’s backroom dealings. The warning may be justified given how the Hood later tells Riri that “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Judging by how the trailer opens, it may be the case that Riri is about to walk the path toward questionable territory just to be part of something iconic. It will be interesting to see how far she will go and what the fallout would be.
Marvel has already announced that the first three episodes of Ironheart will premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the following episodes then released weekly. No second season has been confirmed for the series, but one can still be on the cards if the first season does well enough. Fans can now get a preview of the action, tension, and character conflict in the trailer and a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette.
